Installing an Ornamental Pond

Step 1 Outline your proposed pond shape using a length of rope or garden hose Simple shapes with sweeping curves are best. When you are happy with the shape and location - Start digging!

Step 2 Excavation; make sure that the top edge is level all round. The slope of the sides will depend on the soil structure. Try to avoid banks that are too steep as they may fall in at a later date. Any shelves should not be less 9" from the surface Remove all sharp stones and projections from the base and sides.

Step 3 Line the hole with clean sand or polyester lining so that the liner will not be punctured.

Step 4 Stretch the liner over the hole and anchor with bricks or other similar sized weights. Slowly fill the liner with water, moving the bricks carefully to allow the liner to follow the contours of the hole. Smooth out creases as far as you can during this process. Lots of small pleats are often better that a larger fold.

Step 5 Anchor the edge of the liner round the top either by covering it with stones, or slabs or by burying it in a trench round the perimeter of the pond which can be turfed or planted over. Surplus material can be trimmed off.

Calculating the size of the liner: Length is overall length of the pool plus twice maximum depth. Width is overall width of pond plus twice the depth If you order the liner before you dig the pool you need to be precise with your excavations!

Care must be taken to ensure that ground water does not get under the liner particularly where levels fluctuate
